Felipe Hinojosa, a Mennonite historian living in Edingburg, Texas, spoke about his work “ Making Noise among the Quiet in the Land: Mexican American and Puerto Rican Ethno-Religious Identity in the Mennonite Church, 1932-1980”. Here is an excerpt from his presentation as appears on the screen: “I think it would have been so much healthier, if the Mennonite church would have been willing to accept other culturesÉ.be willing to understand and open about other people’s cultureÉbecause for Mexicans I remember, as a child, Lester Hershey, we would have a fourth of July picnic every year and Hershey would get everyone out.. and I remember one year a member was bringing along a guitar to sing rancheras and Lester put a stop to that immediately..looking back for me what happened was that I associated the guitar and anything Mexican as sinful and evil” Photo by Axel Hernandez / El Puente)
