SJRMC Celebrated “Fiesta de Reyes” on January 6
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center celebrated “Fiesta de Reyes” – Feast of the Three Kings – in the lobby of its Mishawaka campus (5215 Holy Cross Parkway) on Thursday, January 6, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
The fiesta celebrates the arrival of the Three Kings – Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar – with gifts of gold frankincense, and myrrh to the birthplace of the Baby Jesus, guided by the Star of Bethlehem.
Father Tom Lemos from St. Adalbert’s Catholic Parish in South Bend delivered an opening prayer. Three individuals will participated as the Kings wearing the costumes and bringing the gifts to the hospital’s Nativity Scene in the lobby. The gathering then proceeded to the hospital’s Education Center for hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.
As in other cultures, the “Fiesta de Reyes” is an important and traditional celebration in the Latino culture. It is very important in Puerto Rico, the native land of Al Gutierrez, SJRMC’s President and CEO, who delivered brief remarks. Children excitedly go to bed the night before the celebration and wake up early to see what the Kings, who arrive before dawn on the 6th, have brought them. Family and friends gather to celebrate.
Local guitar players Luis Borrero and Benito Salazar provided entertainment and lead the singing of “Villancios Navideños” – Christmas Carols, and Maritza Robles made sure everybody had the best roscas!
