And we now begin another year, one more cycle in the continuous circling of the earth around the sun. Are we going around in circles over the same things year after year? We hear of wars, violence, terrorism and poverty all over the globe. Are there any changes?
We can see the resistance to hate and injustice everywhere. Even in the poorest places there are daily accounts of generosity, kindness and selflessness. One could almost think of the world in two categories, the people who want goodness and the administrations of countries looking after the interest of the few and getting us all involved in warlike or scarcity situations.
As we finish one more rotation around the sun and enter into another, we may become disillusioned thinking of how many things have gone wrong. How many lives we lost, how many were hurt, but humankind is resilient and there is an inner goodness that gives us hope in the midst of pain and confusion.
It is the same sentiment that leads us to count our blessings and move forward. Many times if it wasn’t for the pain we wouldn’t have the opportunity to see things under a different light. Count your blessings if you are able to walk, because others may have difficulty doing so. And also be grateful for health, shelter and loved ones.
Life could be very lonely and sad without others who contribute so much to your life, even at times when you have had profound disagreements.
Be happy to have dear ones close to you, since anyone can leave at any moment, or just be miles and miles away at any point. So enjoy while you can and be present where you are, not just being in the place, but totally engaging in lives and events.
And if there is a lack of money, be grateful for what you have. Others may have less or none. When we count our blessings not only are we full of thankfulness, but also we are able to help extend those blessings to others, as others have done for us at times when we were down.
More important, let us not lose faith in the enormous love of God that provides for everyone. He is not ‘our’ God, but a Spirit that cannot be contained by any given group and has sustained us all in this planet. If we could only keep in mind that ‘the other’ is a reflection of Him, we would not dare injure in any way another individual; we also would not think of others as enemies. There are times in history when one may be in disagreement with others, but we cannot deny them of their divinely shared quality. When problems confront us in this new-year, let us count our blessings and gather strength to face adversity.
As we look back on 2015, let us count our blessings and enter into the new cycle with hope and a better disposition to share and love in the New Year.
