I am very grateful for the wonderful collaboration received from many people the community. From the beginning El Puente has been possible due to the active participation of people who constitute this bridge and send in information, cover events and give us input on issues.
This time while we were working on the current issue we received the wonderful news about the 'Dream Act', about to be introduced very soon by Senator Richard Lugar.
Many people in this community and throughout the country have had hopes for many years of seeing this bill come true.
It should be noted that even though the direct beneficiaries of the legislation would be the immigrant undocumented minors that have attended school in US, the entire nation will also benefit by having youth eager to participate in the country's progress.
First of all, most of these young people were brought into the country at a very young age. When their families decided to come to US in order to look for a better life, they did not ask their young children for their opinion. The families came to work and they have contributed to the wealth of the country. Their children have studied here and as they got closer to the time of graduating they embodied the effort of parents, teachers, cities, and school corporations that have contributed to their success.
It takes a lot of effort and money to get a student to the finish line. It would also be a waste of precious resources not only to punish them by sending them back to their places of origin where they no longer have strong ties, but also to lose their input in the local panorama.
What can we tell the taxpayers about the moneys wasted and the profit sent abroad? Or is this encouraging to the teachers who have spent countless hours trying to figure out how to keep children in school and make them learn better?
With an increasingly older population who is going to work towards the SS fund, or sustain the quality of life that older people need?
People will have their say about this bill. For those who feel threatened by the presence of foreigners the bill represents an undeserved amnesty. If we decide to follow their advice we can be sure of sharing a lot more scarcity and fear. If on the contrary with open hearts and minds we decide to support the young people that have been raised here, we may see a future of grateful people, eager to be part of a great nation.
I want to thank before hand all those who have always been willing to be part of new initiatives that are life giving. I also thank those who in the same way continue to uplift our work and are willing to be part of it.
