A group of 30 some people gathered on Saturday May 1, at 1 pm at El Buen Pastor Mennonite Church for an immigration prayer vigil. Yvonne Diaz, Executive Director of the Hispanic Mennonite Church and member of El Buen Pastor led the meeting which included singing, prayer and sharing. Gilberto Perez led in an opening prayer.
Mario Wenger reminded the group that most of us are immigrants as he recounted that his great- grandparents came to this area after the native Potawatami tribes were forced to relocate to another area so that immigrants from Europe could settle here. He also recalled that what is happening to more recent immigrants is a repetition of such actions from previous times such as the internment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. Sadly. these acts are not “un-American” as it has happened before.
Cynthia Murphy Wardlow spoke about the need for immigration reform and particularly of the need to pass the Dream Act so that young people who came here as children with their families
can get educations that will make them useful and contributing members of our society.
The meeting closed with prayer led by Angel Luis Miranda.
