FORT WAYNE, Ind.– Area letter carriers and students at Abbett Elementary challenged the community to donate to this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 14, 2011. To help out, residents placed their donation of non-perishable items in a grocery bag next to their mailbox on May 14.
Abbett students have already made their contribution to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by competing and winning a local school food drive competition. On Wednesday, Mayor Tom Henry, Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Chair Milton Gray and United Way CEO Todd Stephenson presented the students with the winning trophy for donating 2,077 pounds of food.
“These students have set a great example for all of us to follow,” said Milton Gray, local chair of the Stamp Out Hunger Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. “Many of them come from families who struggle financially, and they understand how important it is to help others in their time of need.”
This is the 19th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive to stamp out hunger. The one-day drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and Guam. Carriers last year collected a record 77.1 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes – pushing the total to more than one billion pounds for the food drive, which began in 1992.
The nation’s 230,000 active letter carriers, as well as rural carriers and other postal employees, will collect the donations and take them to a local food bank, pantry or shelter. In Fort Wayne, much of the food will be taken to Associated Churches Food Bank, which offers families food at no charge through a network of 28 local food pantries in churches and social agencies. In 2010, Associated Churches served 1,275,083 meals with an approximate value of $506,000 to 85,539 individuals.
National partners in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive are: the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, Campbell’s, Feeding America, Valpak, the U.S. Postal Service, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO and Uncle Bob’s Self Storage.
