SOUTH BEND TURNS 150 YEARS OLD TIME TO CELEBRATE!
On May 22, 1865, South Bend was officially incorporated as a city. To celebrate the city’s rich history and its future, South Bend 150 is a year-long, community-wide celebration featuring events for all ages and families. Anniversary events will provide opportunities for residents to deepen their connection to the community, learn South Bend history, and be excited about its future. Throughout 2015, South Bend 150 (SB150) will highlight what hard work, leadership, creativity, and determination have built—and will continue to build.
The party started last weekend with an Olympic-style flaming torch run throughout the city. Salvador Moya, owner of the Frame Factory in South Bend, helped design the exterior of the torch. More than 100 individuals and groups – nominated by community residents – helped carry the torch from the South Bend Airport through portions of the north, south, east and west sides of the city on Saturday and Sunday.
The birthday weekend celebration – May 22-24, which is also Memorial Day weekend – will be the largest ever in the city’s history. The festivities will include an Olympic-style opening ceremony, fireworks, music, art, events, sports, a car show, food booths and a dramatic unveiling of the new South Bend River Lights sculpture. David Seymour of DANCE4LIFE Productions will celebrate Latin music and dance on at Seitz & Sounds Stage on Sat 5/23 from 7-9pm. Most events are free and open to the public. Learn more at
SB150 still needs more than 1,000 volunteers to help with the operation of the birthday weekend celebration, and volunteers will have the chance to win cash prizes and other gifts. Individuals, families, neighborhood organizations, sports teams and youth groups are encouraged to sign up for three-hour shifts at .
