Bicycle Rodeo planned at Zion Lutheran Church June 28

BRISTOL A Bicycle Rodeo is set for Sat., June 28 from 10 a.m. 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 53013 CR 19, Bristol.

The rodeo will be conducted by the Elkhart County SAFE KIDS Coalition. Seventy-five free helmets will be given away at the event. Helmets can go to children or adults, said John Frybort of SAFE KIDS. “We find that if parents or caregivers wear helmets while biking, children are more likely to wear one,” he added. Bristol Lion’s Club is among the sponsors of the free helmets.

The event will also allow kids to ride their bikes on a safety course and have their bikes and helmets inspected. Zion Lutheran Church will provide other activities including a bicycle bingo game with prizes, face painting and a craft table where kids can personalize their own bike license plate. Free refreshments will also be provided.

According to national SAFE KIDS statistics, bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product except the automobile. Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes. Helmet use reduces the risk of bicycle-related death and injury and the severity of head injury when a crash occurs. Unfortunately, national estimates report that helmet use among child bicyclists ranges only from 15-20 percent.
