This summer there won’t be a jazz festival in Indianapolis, Kansas City, or Cincinnati. All three of these well-known jazz festivals have disappeared during the last year, victims of reduced arts sponsorships in a tight economy. Yet the Elkhart Jazz Festival has continued to thrive, a testament to the dedication of the volunteers, sponsors, Elkhart city officials, and the city’s musical traditions. The Elkhart Jazz Festival will fill seven stages for three days of jazz later this month, and while Michiana residents have come to expect great cultural events like the jazz festival, the future of the arts in our communities depends on each of us. While many jazz festivals have faced increasing pressure just to stay alive, the Elkhart Jazz Festival has remained a vital musical event.
