AMERICAN HERITAGE AWARDS
Join us for an inspiring evening as we celebrate the talents, contributions, and accomplishments of notable immigrants and their advocates! The national winner of the Council’s 19th Annual Celebrate America Creative Writing Contest will also read her winning entry.
June 19, 2015, Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.
This year we will be honoring:
Diane Guerrero is a Colombian-American actress best known for the role of Maritza Ramos on the Netflix web series “Orange is the New Black,” which received this year a Screen Actors Guild cast ensemble award. Guerrero also plays the role of Lina on “Jane the Virgin.” Guerrero grew up in Boston and remained there after the rest of her family was deported to Colombia when she was 14. She wrote a powerful opinion article in 2014 for the Los Angeles Times about her experience, and she has become an advocate for commonsense immigration policies.
Gaby Pacheco came to the U.S. at the age of 8 from Guayaquil, Ecuador. She has gained national recognition for her courageous advocacy of the DREAM Act and immigration reform. In 2005, Gaby founded the Florida immigrant youth network, known as Students Working for Equal Rights, as part of the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
There she met three other undocumented students with whom she led a national Trail of Dreams four-month campaign walk from Miami to the nation’s capital. In 2012, she helped persuade President Obama to implement the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and was the first undocumented Latina to testify before Congress. She now serves immigrants as the Program Director of TheDream.US
