Robles appointed to South Bend school board
SOUTH BEND - Maritza Robles, South Bend schools’ retiring director of bilingual services, has spent 30 years attending school board meetings.
Beginning next month, she’ll be sitting on the other side of the board table.
At a special meeting Monday evening, Robles was appointed to complete the six months left of former at-large member Stephanie Spivey’s term.
Robles, 69, is no stranger to the sometimes-contentious nature of school board meetings here.
As an administrator for South Bend schools for the past 30 years, she’s sat in on most of them.
As long as 10 years ago, she said Monday, she began to have an itch to be part of the board.
“I said (to myself), one day I want to sit at that table and ask the questions,” she said. “One day, I want to sit at that table and have a say so in which direction we go.”
Though she’ll naturally be interested in issues that impact English language learners, Robles assured board members during her interview last week that if she was appointed, she’d serve all students. Díaz
