About 100 people gathered at 2 pm in the Goshen Public Library’s meeting room for an Immigration Reform Town Hall, sponsored by the Northern Indiana Community Coalition for Immigration Reform. Guest speakers gave information on different aspects of immigration reform.
Felipe Merino, immigration attorney, explained the different parts of the reform bill that the US Senate has passed. Erwin Zacarias, Dreamer, gave his moving story of growing up in the US but not having documents and how this affected him in many ways. Edward Ahlersmeyer, Chamber of Commerce and City Council member and local businessman spoke about the need to fix the present immigration from the viewpoint of area businesses. Finally Mayor Kauffman related how the broken system negatively affects local government.
Finally, Tony Flora, moderator, read questions and comments from the audience concerning the situation. Ryan Clem, District Director for Jackie Walorski, US Representative from our congressional district, was present to hear and gather information on the thoughts and ideas from our area. Since the US House of Representatives will now need to vote on the Senate bill or come up with another bill of their own, it is important for Rep. Walorski to know the opinions, ideas and wishes of the people she represents.
