Summer Reading Champions
Here at the Warsaw Community Public Library we are celebrating the children—from birth to age 12—who have embraced reading this summer. In early June we proclaimed, “On your mark, get set, read!” and more than 1,000 children have accepted the challenge. Many have returned to the library to share their accomplishments and be crowned summer reading champions.
Every child has unique motivations for reading and for participating in a summer reading program. To appeal to our diverse community of young readers, we are striving to give them a sense of ownership over choosing their rewards. The ability to pick the prize when earning an entry in the drawing has motivated some school-age children to continue reading well beyond the finish line.
One such reader was so inspired to keep going that she visited several days in a row to report her progress, and each time she even began to read something new on the spot. Another reading champion embraced the role of trainer for a younger brother, encouraging his efforts by finding him interesting books to read.
Of course this program could not succeed without all the dedicated coaches. Every day we see parents and caregivers supporting children as they discover a unique motivation to read. And it is thanks to the local businesses and community partners who champion summer reading that we are able to offer a variety of prizes.
We at the library are rooting for the young readers in your life. We look forward to high-fiving this
summer’s accomplishments and helping you make a game plan for August and beyond.
