Art Center and the Mexican Consulate requests altar proposals for El Día de Muertos

Indianapolis— The Indianapolis Art Center is in search of artists and community members who want to design and install temporary altars to be exhibited during the Indianapolis Art Center’s El Día de Muertos/The Day of the Dead festival. The altars will be on view at the Art Cente from October 24 to November 9, 2003. The Art Center is located at 820 E. 67th St. in Broad Ripple.

There are few requirements for altar design, but an altar is traditionally raised in memory or honor of someone who has died. Many altars are raised for historic or contemporary significant figures, or for groups such as victims of violent crimes or disease. Altars can also honor causes or events. The design can be in a traditional style or be an artistic interpretation of the altar format.

To receive more information, including a packet containing design suggestions and a proposal form, contact Susan Watt, Exhibitions Associate, at (317) 255-2464 x238 or by e-mail at, as well as Mexican Consulate to Dulce Vega, at (317) 951 00 05 ext. 223 or by e-mail at

All exhibitions at the Art Center are free and open to the public. Indianapolis Art Center hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday Noon-6 p.m.
