BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF ELKHART COUNTY ANNOUNCES VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Elkhart, IN—August 15, 2014 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County announced “Bigs of the Year” awards at the agency’s summer picnic at Ideal Beach. “Bigs” are adult volunteers who are paired up in one-to-one relationships with children. These individuals were recognized for their ongoing dedication, consistency and compassion as role models to children. “These men and women give of their time, building a friendship that foundationally shapes their Little’s future in a very positive way,” stated Stephanie Patka, Executive Director.
Big Brother of the Year Craig Smith was matched to Little Brother Tony Araujo in July of 2009. Growing up in a house of 8 children with his grandmother, Tony loves the individual attention that he gets with Craig. Since meeting his Big Brother, Tony has been exposed new activities like fishing, bike riding, games, cookouts and movies.
Big Sister of the Year Jo Ellen Davis met her Little Sister Tamra Davis in March of 2011. Jo Ellen and Tamra get together about every other week and really love doing outdoor activities and getting ice cream. These Sisters love to participate in BBBS events like Kamp Keystone, Bowl for Kids’ Sake and the Annual Picnic.
Rookie Big Brother of the Year Jaime Santiago signed up to be a Big during his company’s health fair and has been matched to Little Brother Brycen Wrigley since October of 2013. Jaime and Brycen get together every other week usually on Sunday. During the winter, they spent a lot of time going to the movies, playing video games and going out to eat but in the nice weather the Brothers spend more time outdoors golfing.
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity – often of single or low-income households or families where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military – with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The Big Brothers Big Sisters agency is looking for more men and women to mentor the over 130 waiting Little Brothers and Little Sisters.
