SST at Seventy

A young woman, Kati, who lives in La Chureca, one of the world’s largest dumps, took these photos.  Many of the people who work in the dump salvaging items that can be recycled also live there in houses they have constructed from materials collected from the garbage dump. Kati belongs to a group of 16 young people who live in the dump and are in a program to help them improve their skills and education.

They are learning how use computers, photography with digital and movie cameras, broadcasting.  They have the opportunity 3 or 4 times a year to give a 3-minute broadcast with information about their community of La Chureca.

The pictures are part of an effort on their part to document their life and community. Kati used one of our cameras to take these pictures for us to have and use for letting the rest of the world know about their corner of the world.

The next time I will write more about La Chureca and its inhabitants.
