WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University has won a $105 million federal grant — the largest in school history — to lead a new research center devoted to reducing the loss of human life in earthquakes and tsunamis. FREE SOUTH BEND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT TO OPEN NEW CHRIS WILSON PERFORMING ARTS PAVILION AT POTAWATOMI PARK To celebrate the dedication and grand opening of the new Chris Wilson Pavilion at Potawatomi Park, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, with Maestro Tsung Yeh conducting, will perform a special concert on Sunday, September 27, at 3 p.m. The first half of the concert will be a reflection on America’s “melting pot” heritage with music from German, French, Polish, English, and Russian composers; the second half will celebrate American Pops with music composed by John Williams, Cole Porter, and Henry Mancini SST at Seventy
A young woman, Kati, who lives in La Chureca, one of the world’s largest dumps, took these photos. Many of the people who work in the dump salvaging items that can be recycled also live there in houses they have constructed from materials collected from the garbage dump. Kati belongs to a group of 16 young people who live in the dump and are in a program to help them improve their skills and education. Veronica Figueroa of Plymouth organized the Heart and Hands’ parade float at Plymouth’s Blueberry Festival. Twenty local children were dressed in period clothing that represented the history and heritage of Mexico. Some famous characters were Pancho Villa, Juan Diego, Hidalgo, Guerrero Azteca, and many others. The float was a hit with many of the spectators. Plans are already in the making for next year’s float.
