INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Museum gets hot and spicy at a new one-day program on Sept. 29 during Hispanic Heritage Month. Latino Festival of the Arts (Latinofest) will showcase the best in Latino music and culture, including salsa dancing, organization booths representing more than 20 Latino businesses, games, visual artists, and family arts and crafts activities. The Latino Festival will take place in the Governor Frank O’Bannon Great Hall and is free to the public.

“Consul of Mexico Juan Solana and I are having the best time leading the challenge to inaugurate a new downtown tradition,” said event co-chair and local businessman Marco Dominguez. The festival’s planning committee consists of a dozen Latino community leaders who are partnering with the museum to grow the event.

Radio Disney Indianapolis, a key partner for Latino Festival, will feature a 90-minute experience that includes music, games, activities, dance parties and prize drawings. They will also offer their FREE Bilingual Kid’s Safety ID program, sponsored by AT&T Advertising Solutions.

“We see the Bilingual Kid’s Safety ID program as a first-step for Latino families to take toward their children’s safety,” said Jaclyn Knowles, promotions coordinator at Radio Disney Indianapolis. “The ID card includes a photo of the child, their full name, parents’/guardians’ name and phone number, height, weight, eye and hair color. The backside of the ID will include information about the child’s allergies as well as a few safety tips provided by AT&T Advertising Solutions.”

The celebration begins with a one-hour musical performance by Staci Sandoval and Trio Compaz and a salsa dance demonstration by Yang Xiao and IntoSalsa Dance Company of Indianapolis. After the performance is an opening ceremony featuring a parade of flags representing Latino countries, comments by co-chairs Marco Dominguez, Consul of Mexico Juan Solana, Mayor Dean Jessup of Lawrence, Carlos Sosa of the Sosa Group, and Jaclyn Knowles of Radio Disney Indianapolis. Raphael Sanchez of WRTV 6 is the host of the opening ceremony, presenting in English and Spanish.
