South Bend Community School Corp. is starting off the 2012-2013 year with an estimated 474 fewer students. While 744 kids are considered “no shows” because they haven’t returned this school year and their families haven’t indicated they were transferring out that number is offset by 270 new students.
Sue Coney, spokeswoman for the 20,000-student district, confirmed the preliminary enrollment numbers on Friday, which was the first of two official state enrollment count days this school year.
She pointed out that for funding purposes, kindergartners and preschoolers are each counted as one-half a student.
Indiana schools’ funding is directly tied to the number of students enrolled. The new formula essentially allows the money to follow the student.
