cristinamessick left Ecuador at 15 to study in the United States. While staying with relatives she graduated from Concord High School and now after marriage and 2 children she is continuing that education at Gohen College.  She and her husband, Jeremy, decided that they both wanted to go to college.

However there is more to the story.  Because they have children and all the responsibilities connected with a family, they decided he would study first and as soon as it was finacially feasible, she would go to school.

Jeremy just received his degree in biology, so it was her turn to study nursing.  Because of educational debts she was thinking about IUSB.  Goshen College was something she thought about, but the cost was beyond what they could do since there were still debts from his schooling.

Cristina worked for seven years at Dr. Michelle Shelly’s office as a medical assistant.  One day a patient, who knew her plans to study for a nursing degree, asked if she had considered applying at Goshen College.  She explained that it would be too costly, but the patient encouraged her to try as there would probably be grants and scholarships available.  After some more talking, she applied and was accepted.

She qualified for a several different kinds of aid, includng being a first generation minority in her family to go to college, and she is receiving a full ride for all four years.  Cristina said, “When I got the call from Gilberto Perez he asked me if I was sitting down.  When he told me that I was going to have all my expenses paid, I started crying.”

Cristina is very grateful to be in school and says that everyone is so friendly and helpful. She added,  “I wouldn’t be able to do this without my family’s support...My parents, siblings, niece who help me babysitting my little ones and my husband supports me in everything I do. He’s definitely my rock!!!

We say, “ Go for it Cristina!  You will make an outstanding nurse and we will celebrate your journey.  God bless you!”
