Hispanic Sinclair Students Participate in Statewide Chamber Event

Dayton, Ohio -- Four members of Sinclair Community College’s Latinos Unidos en Sinclair (LUS) recently attended the Sixth Awards Gala of the Ohio Hispanic Chambers of Commerce in Columbus. They were sponsored by the Greater Dayton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“The purpose of Latinos Unidos en Sinclair is to encourage greater understan-ding, enrichment and coope-ration for Hispanic and Latino students at Sinclair,” said Lilly Calderon club advisor and Sinclair Hispanic liaison. “By doing that we hope to help them achieve their educational goals and become better empowered for their future.”

LUS strives to help Latino students feel welcome on the Sinclair campus and encourage the retention and active involvement of Latino students. The club promotes events and activities to teach others about the Latino and Hispanic culture. The club is establishing a You Can Succeed Scholarship Fund and is opening lines of communication with Latino and Hispanic students at other. One of the four Sinclair Hispanic student participants was Martha Velez a communications major. Originally from Mexico, Velez is LUS president.

Xiomara Navarrete recently arrived from Chile to learn English at Sinclair. She is the new LUS vice president. Among her plans are to complete her ESL courses and to register for an associate degree program

Enrique Fondon is a Culinary Arts major in the Hospitality Management program at Sinclair. Fondon came to Sinclair as an adult learner. Instead of returning to Mexico for the winter, he decided to face the challenge of obtaining a college education and registered at Sinclair

Luciano Tacuri is a Business Information Systems major. Originally from Bolivia, Tacuri is very involved with Sinclair’s International Club and Latinos Unidos en Sinclair.
