Lavender Jazz, Goshen College's Big Band, opened its 2003-04 concert season at the Sauder Concert Hall in the Music Center on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The concert was free and open to the public. With its new director, Sonny Carreño, Lavender Jazz embarked on "A Journey Through Time, Space and Jazz." During the concert, the band traced the roots of jazz by featuring works from such composers as Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Perez Prado, Lennon & McCartney and Henry Mancini.
Sonny Carreño, the newly appointed director of Lavender Jazz, earned a bachelor's degree from Texas State University-San Marcos. He taught band for five years in the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District. Carreño has taught English as a New Language (ENL) for the past 11 years and currently chairs the ENL Department at Goshen Middle School. For over 25 years, Carreño has drummed professionally in a wide variety of styles and venues, including Latin, Rock/Pop, R&B, Country and Western and World Beat.
