Transpo and the Interurban Trolley Announce the Return of the Free K-12 Summer Travel Program
The South Bend Public Transportation Corporation (Transpo) and the Interurban Trolley announced the free K-12 Summer Travel Program will return for 2023. The K-12 Summer Travel Program provides unlimited travel for K-12 students during the months of June, July, and August.
Transpo’s Summer Travel Program first launched in 2013 and provided K-12 students with discounted travel throughout the summer. In 2018, to introduce more K-12 students to public transportation and provide increased access to employment, educational and recreational opportunities, the program was offered at no charge for the first time, increasing K-12 summer ridership over 300%.
In 2019 the program expanded to include free travel on the Interurban Trolley (interurbantrolley.com) serving the cities of Elkhart and Goshen. The two transit systems connect via the jointly operated Yellow Line running between Transpo’s Mishawaka Transfer Center and downtown Elkhart.
To be eligible for free travel on any Transpo or Interurban Trolley fixed routes, K-12 students just need to show their valid student identification card each time they board a bus. For homeschooled students or those who attend a school that does not issue an ID card, please contact Transpo’s office at 574.232.9901 or visit the Transpo Information Booth at South Street Station to receive a pass.
