May First Fridays Presents the Green Day Celebration

Presented by Downtown Goshen Inc., the May First Fridays Green Day Celebration in Downtown Goshen—May 3 from 5-9 p.m., and centered on the courthouse lawn—features an exciting assortment of outdoor events and family-friendly activities, booths and vendors, live entertainment, and dining and shopping options in the heart of The Maple City.

An environmental extravaganza presented in collaboration with the Goshen Shade Tree Board and the Goshen Department of Environmental Resilience (ERD), the Green Day Celebration includes environmental awareness and sustainability activities and programs, a free tree sapling giveaway, live entertainment headlined by Goshen’s acclaimed Americana band Shiny Shiny Black, springtime shopping deals and specials, and great food and drink options, including an assortment of food trucks.

“May is one of the best times of the year to get outside and celebrate with friends and family, and the Green Day Celebration adds an extra element in focusing on environmental awareness and sustainability,” said Director of First Fridays Amanda Rose. “First Fridays brings so much of our community together, and we’re happy to collaborate on this event with the Goshen ERD and the Shade Tree Board. We’ve got activities for all, some great entertainment lined up, and so many great vendors. The Green Day Celebration is all about having some good, green fun under the sun, celebrating Goshen and Elkhart County, and making our world better.”

The Green Day Celebration also presents an awards show, performances by Goshen Elementary School choirs and Nayo Ulloa, and a vibrant assortment of fun and educational booths and displays. Activities for kids include tree climbing classes with My Tree Climber, face painting from DJ Creations, a magic show featuring Jep Hostetler, the First Fridays petting zoo, and an abundance of crafting sessions to celebrate the many natural wonders of Elkhart County, and the world.

Among the Green Day Celebration highlights:

  • The Goshen ERD presents a host of activities, including a tree and t-shirt giveaway, a career and information table, and a backyard habitat learning session.
  • HartWood Treecare presents a tree climbing safety demonstration.
  • Trees for Goshen conducts a tree raffle.
  • Americorps Goshen presents a bike valet and information booth.
  • Wellfield Botanical Gardens presents a seed identification and tree habitat learning session.
  • Elkhart-South Bend Aquatic Biology presents live fish and demonstrations.
  • The Green Bee will be on-site featuring their sustainable home and health products.
  • Steve Shantz presents information about shiitake mushrooms and acorn planting.

Additionally, for the young and the young-at-heart: ADEC presents a rock painting activity; an Art Table, featuring tree art activities, is presented by the Goshen Shade Tree Board; the City of Goshen’s Kid Mayor program hosts an info booth and presents members of its Mini City Council to field questions and hand out Kid Mayor stickers; the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College presents live reptiles and amphibians for demonstration; and the Goshen Public Library highlights books about trees and Arbor Day, and presents story readings.
