The Elkhart County Symphony Announces Community Auditions

The Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) will be holding auditions for substitute and extra musicians—brass, woodwind, strings, and percussion—on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Concord Junior High School, 59397 County Road 11, in Elkhart.

These auditions are not for replacing regular orchestra members, rather to add depth to ECSO’s list of substitutes and extra musicians. Auditionees will be asked to play two brief contrasting works—these should be excerpts of standard solo or orchestral repertoire of the performer’s choice.

“The Elkhart County Symphony truly embodies the sense of a community symphony, and not just because so many local folks come to our concerts and programs,” said Glenn Northern, the decorated, longtime music educator and Penn High School Band Leader who began in his new role as ECSO Executive Director to start the summer. “More than that, the spirit and the sound of the Elkhart County Symphony—to a great degree—comes from within. We are always interested in bringing in more musicians from our community to add to our overall depth and increase our amazing talent pool. These auditions are important for us, and they are also quite beneficial to established and rising musicians throughout the area who aspire to be a part of a high-quality orchestral group.”

All those with friends or family members who are classical musicians are asked to pass on the audition details. Applicants must register—by completing the Google application form—by Sept. 4 to secure an ECSO audition time. Anyone with questions can contact Debra Inglefield by email at inglefi@gmail.com, or call or text Debra at (574) 343-9539.

The Elkhart County Symphony’s 79th season begins Sept. 13 at Wellfield Botanic Gardens with ¡Ritmo Botánico!, a high-energy celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month featuring guest soloist Heidi Eash, ECSO’s principal oboist.
