EXPERIENCE PEAK MIGRATION AT RIVER PRESERVE
BIRD TOUR TO OFFER A FEATHERED FRENZY OF ACTIVITY
Elkhart County is on the brink of a feathery invasion. It’s official – fall migration is underway and birds are on the move. Early September marks peak migration as millions of birds move south toward their wintering grounds. Join the Elkhart County Parks as migration kicks into high gear on a Wednesday Bird Walk on September 4 from 8–11 a.m. at Benton Spillway in River Preserve County Park.
Tracing the Elkhart River corridor, the 350-acre River Preserve County Park provides a crucial stopping point for south-bound birds to rest and refuel. Bird guide, Annie Aguirre, will be leading the hike at the preserve. “Spring migration is often thought of as the best time of the year to go birding, but fall can be just as exciting,” stated Aguirre. “The diverse habitats and waterways in the preserve act like a migration magnet to birds, so on a good day, we could see over 40 species, plus any rarities that decide to drop in.”
The free hike in September will give visitors the chance to follow the path of songbirds moving along the Elkhart River corridor and watch them weave their way through the trees, snatching insects as their fast food. Seasonal specialties, like Olive-sided Flycatcher and Yellow-throated Vireo, along with 20 different warbler species are all likely to be seen.
The event is free and open to ages 8+. Rain or shine, all activities will take place outside, so participants are encouraged to dress for the weather. Binoculars will be available for use. Birders will meet at Benton Spillway in River Preserve County Park, located one mile south of US-33 on C.R. 31 in Goshen.
The Elkhart County Parks offers bird walks on the first Wednesday of every month starting at 8 a.m. The 2024 walks include a different bird theme for each month. The line-up includes:

• Corson Hike: November 6 at Corson Riverwoods County Park
