Changes at the South Bend Schools

The South Bend Community School Corp. board approved an overhaul of the district that will close or merge five schools, send fifth -graders back to elementary school, redraw neighborhood school boundaries and change start and dismissal times.

Corporation officials drew up the “Focus 2018” plan largely in response to years of declining enrollment, which has let many buildings operating under capacity amid competition from neighboring districts and charter and private schools.

Fifth-graders will move back to primary centers from intermediate centers. Primary and intermediate centers would go back to being traditional elementary and middle schools.

As proposed in November, the plan will close Brown and Greene intermediate centers and the Eggleston building, which houses the Rise Up Academy alternative school.

Marshall Intermediate Center and Perley will also close and their students will merge with other schools, though the buildings will stay open for possible uses in the future.

Middle and high schools will change to later start and dismissal times, and elementary schools would add almost an hour of daily class time.
