“A Day without Immigrants” was an eye opener for those who said no to any activity and stayed home, those demonstrated and also for those who did not respond to it. A day that called for immigrants and children of immigrants from anywhere in the world, present in the United States to state with their absence how they are part of communities everywhere in the nation. It was nota Latino Day, but a true call to descendants of any origin who through they work and participation have made a difference in the country. You can find immigrants working at all levels, from scientists, housewives, sales people, teachers, doctors, cooks, cleaners and every type of work you can imagine. Students have also play a big part and they continue to be the dreamers who move everyone forward. Many businesses, individuals and organizations also close as a way of showing solidarity, but also acknowledgement that most of their businesses need the immigrant population as workers and clients, besides in some cases they are co-workers, relatives, friends, church members, etc. It is unclear how many people participated, but it was notices everywhere. More actions are being planned for May 1. I think we are seeing an awakening of the people in United States, common people who have decided they will be heard. There is a clamor from women, immigrants, minorities, that feel disrespected by the current administration. Locally the motion begun to close their places came from the business owners, big and small stores and big enterprises like Intercambio Express. Many workers and students did not attend work of schools. The social media, and the local Latino radio stations strengthened the statements from the business. There was a common purpose. No leader was needed, but the force of the people itself that carried the sentiment that had been harbored in the lives of many. Others felt they ‘had’ to go to work, or face being fired. Or they felt they had to be responsible with the tasks assigned to them, some maybe were just plain afraid. No judgment is done on those who decided to work or study. Each one knows his/her circumstances better, the hope is that if a new call is made, they will trust and comply with it. Since January 20, of the current year, thousands of courageous people have raised their voices and taken the streets to show the elected representatives that they must respond to the people. It is exciting to see the many threads weaving a different future for this nation, where people are marching to the tune of ‘One human race”, where each one is important. One can feel the people getting stronger as they meet, talk and reach agreements to mobilize and help each other out. Some will be disappointed because they expected a very specific answer, but most will feel pride for writing a new page in history. History is made by people and here one can see history in action.
