Americans for Prosperity Disappointed in House Passing Massive, Unnecessary Tax Hike on Hoosiers

INDIANAPOLIS - Americans for Prosperity - Indiana responded to the State House vote on HB 1002 today, which includes multiple massive tax increases, including a 10 cent gas tax increase (indexed to increase with inflation), a $15 per vehicle fee, and the potential for tolling. While AFP-IN supported changes made to the legislation at the last minute, including dedicating all sales tax on gasoline to roads, the grassroots organization maintained that the tax hike is bad policy.

AFP-IN State Director Justin Stevens offered the following statement:

“If HB 1002 is not stopped in the Senate or vetoed by the governor, Hoosier families face a massive increase in their gas taxes and a new vehicle tax. These unnecessary revenue schemes will make it more difficult for Hoosier families while failing make infrastructure a priority in the budgeting process.

State representatives were on the right track when they modified HB 1002 to dedicate all sales tax on gasoline to roads and bridges and we wish they had worked to address our infrastructure needs with existing revenue. We hope that our state senators will slow the process down and stop this unnecessary gas tax.”

According to state revenue reports, revenue collections in 2017 are $217 million higher than they were last year and are expected to increase by $1 billion over the next biennium.

Americans for Prosperity - Indiana has relentlessly opposed the gas tax hike, urging lawmakers to instead dedicate all sales tax on gasoline to roads and bridges and find existing revenues to cover infrastructure needs. AFP hosted townhalls, ran digital ads, and connected thousands of citizens with their lawmakers through emails and phone banks.
