Several times throughout the past 27 years I have mentioned that El Puente started in March, 1992. I will say it again! I will also affirm that El Puente was offered to the Lord and we have tried to be of service to the community, always working towards improving relations as the name ‘the bridge’ indicates. Even though our entire family has dedicated endless hours to this work, we must also acknowledge that numerous individuals, organizations and such have contributed in this task. There are people like Tito and Rachel Guedea who had been with us from the beginning, others were there for a while and left, and others, who altogether lost touch with the cause. El Puente started as the first Spanish language newspaper in Indiana. At a time when there was no Spanish assistance anywhere, we worked towards making new laws and rules available to the newcomers. At one point there were many more Spanish language newspapers in Michiana, but after the recession, they disappeared as also did some of the English language newspapers. Currently the South Bend Tribune which was the last locally owned, has just sold their property to a newspaper chain. During these years we have covered the triumphs and troubles of the Michiana community, while keeping them informed about the national and even international scope of things that may affect them. We have taken pictures of as many high school and college graduates as we could, until there were so many that it was impossible to take individual pictures of each of them. We have also announced the new citizens born in the area and we have applauded the efforts of the many families who by working hard, have been able to move their families ahead, making possible for the younger generation to attend college. We have witnessed the struggles of the first businesses, who had to face a new culture, prejudice and lack of resources, but nevertheless managed to establish their businesses. The churches always had an open space in the newspaper, to share their hours and places of service, and many times the special events held.
