I have been paying attention to people’s concerns lately. Greg Lewis is worried that even though he is now working, he doesn’t make enough money like he did six years ago. Maria Sanchez is worried that her husband is still undocumented and that he will get deported before they can legalize his status in the country. Lewis Jones is studying to be a teacher. He really would like to teach elementary students, but he now worries that he will not have a way to pay his huge student loans. Mr. Smith is worried that his insurance premiums are going up and he has to care for his wife and three children. Pedro Gonzalez was born in Indiana, but he cries every day when he is back home from school just thinking about his undocumented parents and what may happen to him if they are deported. I know that many of them watch the electoral campaign and the debates. They are paying close attention, looking for their issues to be brought to the table, but their concerns are not being discussed in the election campaign. They hear about rigged elections, sexual complaints, strong mutual accusations. The conversation is almost like watching children playing on the playground. They yell insults at each other while the crowd around them encourages them to keep on fighting. Maybe someone remembers to call a teacher to stop the fight, but they all know the fight will continue after school. Meanwhile every kid in school will take sides without knowing what they are fighting about. When this common people watch the debates, do they feel they are been ignored, or played? Does it make sense that the big political figures can throw around so much garbage that you feel that whoever gets to be president still smells like garbage? How can you trust any of them if so many bad things are said about them? How can you trust a system that has allowed this situation to come about? Where are the programs that these people are offering? There is no clear line about what they are proposing. There are only loose sentences full of promises prepared according to the crowd they are addressing. The current election shows a downgrade of all civility in the United States, along with a lot of disrespect both for the citizens and foreigners everywhere. It seems that their campaign to win is the only relevant thing. And after we have a president, what happens then? Do we begin to scrub clean our minds of all the dirt and start creating a real agenda to move the country forward? When are the questions concerning immigration reform, higher taxes for big corporations, higher minimum salaries for the workers, and other things that are a necessity for individuals who work very hard everyday. When the elected congress people go to work will they remember the common folk, or will they continue to play party politics leaving things undone. How can the common citizens voting in this election make sure that a real change takes place?
