I can’t help but think that we are not really seeing what is really important at this time. While everybody has concentrated on whether Kavanaugh, the supreme Court candidate has lied or not about abusing women, or drinking, for a while we have forgotten about other matters that affect a good number of people. Just a few days ago, Hurricane Florence descended on the Carolinas, flooding them and causing a lot of people to leave their homes and flee the site. That is a bad thing, but what is even worse is to think that once more the big chicken and pork farms that have polluted the rivers are now polluting the entire region even more since thousands of chickens and pigs died in the flooding. For a long time local residents had opposed the growing farms, but no one listened to them. Now they face a real catastrophe in their own homes. At other places thousands of children who continue to be separated from their parents since they were detained after crossing the border, now have been moved to a tent city, and there are reports about physical and sexual abuse in several of the detention places. And just a day before the interrogation of Kavanaugh and one of his victims, Mr . Trump had spoken at the UN session and the entire diplomatic community laughed when he said: “In less than two years my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the entire history of our country.” There was a pause. Then, Trump continued, “America’s—so true”—but he was interrupted by laughter. But that was not all. He spoke about U.S. guns and how the country has a powerful army and at the same time that he had threats for Venezuela, Iran and China. If due to his huge ego, United States embarks in a war, the people here and abroad will pay dearly, and that is not a game. Usually when everyone is looking at one specific issue that is been splashed all over the media, other serious matters get overlooked or are treated lightly, while all the attention gets focused on issues that are important but not vital. They would be if people actually had a say in who runs for congress and therefore who votes on matters like the ones taking place now, but a lot of people are disillusioned about the way politics are happening in this country. At one time people use to think that police force and politicians were honest. There were probably one or two who were not, but most people were honest and meant well. After so many scandals, and lies, a lot of people are thinking that candidates for any position are getting there by selling their souls. Have you looked at any of the ads from the multiple candidates running? Would you trust any of them as a friend in your house? The drama being played in Washington affects us all, but it is far away from our reality as it is away from the reality of those who lost their homes, are flooded in contaminated waters, are not feeling the pain of the families affected by the separation of their children, etc, etc. In Washington you are a number, one more in a list to be quoted, but not to hear, or respond to. What is really important at this point? Do you know the people that work locally? Can you trust them? If you do, then you can work alongside them, especially if you can do that throughout the year and not only at election time.
