Spanish 2 Heritage students shared original works at La Casa de Amistad Saint Joe students took an educational field trip to La Casa de Amistad to read their original works of Los números / The Numbers, Pugs en el parque , and En el parque with mamá to children in the Yo Puedo Leer program. “Students in my Spanish 2 Heritage class are finishing up a unit on children’s stories and other simple texts. To begin the unit, students read different simple texts and analyzed them. Students then read several children’s stories and analyzed them as we studied the different elements of a children’s story and how they are different from other simple texts,” said teacher Brianna Stines. To complete the project, students created their own children’s story. “Students have completed a storyboard, a rough draft, and now the final book all with their own ideas for the children’s story created solely by them. As a class, we will choose several of the best books and take them to La Casa de Amistad and read with the small, bilingual children there. Students created bilingual books, with both Spanish and English, because La Casa de Amistad communicated a need for them to best help the young students in their Puedo Leer (I Can Read) class. This project has been a symbiotic endeavor as we help the young students and in doing so high school students improve their formal Spanish grammar skills.” According to Stines, Saint Joseph High School is one of the only high schools in the area to offer Spanish Classes for heritage speakers who have grown up speaking the language. These students have a large vocabulary in the target language but lack reading and writing skills in the formal register. To improve their skills students read and write to discover grammar concepts rather than direct grammar instruction that is seen in a “regular” Spanish class. “This project has been a great way to improve students Spanish grammar skills and do a good thing for the community. Students are excited to visit the Latino outreach and some are even considering donating their one of a kind book to the center. This is a great example of students at SJHS serving with joy while growing in mind and faith,” said Stines.
