This is a wonderful year to celebrate Christmas. I am not referring to all the rush of buying presents and decorations, but to the celebration of God incarnated and coming to be with us. It is supposed to teach us about love, solidarity and justice. Above all it is caring for those who are in difficult situations, or are different; it challenges the notion of loving only family and friends because they are like us. It is interesting to notice that people are ready for an easy show of generosity towards those in need, but it does not include getting close to them and living with them even for one day. There will be campaigns to collect ‘gently used’ coats and jackets, and maybe some sort of toys for the kids who do not have any. But what do we think about the other 364 days of the year? When we look at the kind of distress people are living before and after this year’s presidential election, we realize that we need to hold on to hope, because there is no clear future. But there is hope because many small groups everywhere have been moving towards meaningful solidarity. They are looking for a new common ground that will allow us to work and move ahead. Due to the different issues that are at stake, there is a lot of confusion and distrust. The economy we have been under has created a climate of individualism and self-centeredness that is part of how people communicate and organize. We have become dehumanized by the way businesses are run and how life itself has turned into a business. This year, we can look up at places like North Dakota where the pipeline struggle brought together the common goal of fighting for something that will not benefit one individual or even a tribe, but future generations. They are thinking about earth itself that sustains us all and the water that makes it possible for people to live on this planet. People from several tribes from United States and even the world have been there standing with then, sharing the resources, the work, and inconveniences. That is a real Christmas every day story! They refused to stand in fear, and moved to do what is right. Others saw their meaningful move and joined in. They were able to hope for a different future and even though the odds were against them, they have prevailed. Hope is linked to faith. It is trusting that the best is yet to come because goodness, love and caring are a bigger force than hate and divisiveness. This is the time to raise faith, hope and love and enjoy the holydays making them holy with our attitude, and our inner resources. From the bottomless strength of love we can move forward and be with others. I refuse to lower my head to the forces of evil. Will you do the same?
