We have arrived at the last edition of 2018. A lot has happened this year. We have seen many strong community efforts fall apart under the new federal administration, and meaningful strides forward at the local level.

The world had been through several climate derived catastrophes and plenty of people have died or have lost all due to those events. Floods, fires, and daily killings worldwide let us think that we are doomed and there is no hope.

When one can see so many suffering and fleeing their countries of origin, only to find rejection, persecution and even death, there is a sense of total loss just thinking of all the despair and hopelessness that appears instead of a path to abundance and equity in the world.

Thousands of individuals and also groups have worked tirelessly towards the wellbeing of humanity. In the name of religion, political parties, beliefs, they have strived for a better world, therefore, it is awful when at the end of the year you see just the opposite, at least that’s what the general media want us to see.

There is general tendency to believe in great leaders that move the masses just with the effort of their voice or writing. Many people still wait for the elected leader to change their daily lives with a magical signature on a paper so that all that afflicts us will change.

Reality shows us something different. The real changes are taking place everywhere at the local level. Real leaders come from the heart of the people and never forget where they came from. They are moving in ways that involve their communities and every one of their acts is accountable to the same people they are working with.

We have to make a real effort to support those actions that move communities and give hope.

There is hope when you see in someone else’s face that change is taking place and they feel empowered because they made that change possible.

A true leader is not the one who speaks louder or moves according only to his/her thoughts. A true leader is the one that by being in tune with others is able to verbalize their dreams and turn them into actions. A true leader does not push, or command, but instead motivates, supports and coaches others into action.

Leaders like these are sprouting in communities. They are the ones who work for the welfare of all and listen carefully to the outside propositions and with good judgement are able as a body to welcome them or to reject them.

Dreamers have been tempted in more than one occasion to take advantage of a proposal, in detriment of their communities and with extraordinary courage, they declined to accept something that would benefit their future but endanger their parents and friends.

It is with great pleasure that we have dedicated this issue of El Puente to several leaders that received an award by the Indiana Latino Expo this month.

Names like Manuel Cortes, Dara Marquez and Juan Constantino have been part of the 2018 local history, and we foresee they will also be in the coming years. There is hope when one can see the work of many who have surrounded and supported these young leaders. They bring us new ways of working, networking and confronting the system while smiling, and doing their best in their work and daily lives.

We know that there are other leaders elsewhere who are doing exactly that, in their respective communities and responding in creative ways to the challenges that especially the immigrant communities face.

The big changes in history did not take place when an individual yelled for a change of course and others blindly followed. The changes take place when the threads that weave a community together grow stronger in trust due to the collective work towards a common purpose.

Thank you, young leaders! For showing us all that there is change and there is hope.
