As times grow tougher for many folks caught in the middle of Elkhart County’s economic crisis, local and national artists are banding together like never before to do their part to aid those in need. Northern Indiana Americana rockers Wilson’s Reservoir, in conjunction with numerous local businesses and The Goshen Theater, planned an April 11 concert with all proceeds benefiting Goshen food pantry/social service organization The Window. Joining the band for this event was the critically acclaimed Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania outfit, Strand of Oaks. AS CIGARETTE TAXES INCREASE, “THERE”S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO QUIT SMOKING” Indianapolis – In the wake of a dramatic price increase on cigarettes, Hoosiers are seeking help to quit smoking in record numbers. In early March, the major tobacco companies hiked prices ahead of an increase in the federal excise tobacco tax scheduled for April. In the first week following the tobacco industry price increases, the number of calls to the free Indiana Tobacco Quitline – 1-800-QUIT-NOW – tripled reaching the highest level since was the service began three years ago.
Two wonderful Amish and Mennonite traditions are coming together in Shipshewana: quilting, and raising funds for mission work. A quilting bee is buzzing on the third floor of the Davis Mercantile in downtown Shipshewana. The event continues through April 24 and has been drawing women from around the region. Everyone is invited to trying out their hand at stitching, regardless of their experience or age. Healthy dialogue in either language
If Sanjuana Trillo and Rich Meyer were left alone in the same room, they’d have trouble communicating. Meyer speaks only English, while Trillo only Spanish. Yet they serve on the same board of directors — of Maple City Health Care Center in Goshen.
